The Mobile Equipment Page

I have been involved with a number of vehicle automation projects on large mobile machines. Here are a few photographs taken during various projects. If you want an enlarged version of any of the pictures just click on them.

This project involved developing an "Active Cab" on a large forestry machine in Northern Sweden. The term "Active Cab" means that the driver is hydraulically isolated from shocks and vibrations seen by the vehicle. The photograph shows field data being recorded from an instrumented machine   This is also part of the "Active Cab" project and was taken at Luleå University where we had access to a simulator with five degrees of freedom on which we could mount a complete vehicle cab and test and develop various control systems.
This shows a JCB earth-moving machine under test. I have been involved in a number of development projects on excavators and earth moving machines, however, as most are either still under development, in the process of being patented or being put into production I can say little more   This shows a diesel power unit on a test bed. We were evaluating a number of electronic control systems prior to implementing on the vehicle.
During one project I got involved with the design and stress analysis of a new access platform for a fire appliance. It was designed to work 60m from the ground. Fortunately I never got to ride in it.
