The Hazardous Environment Page

Over the years I have been involved with a number of projects where the equipment had to operate satisfactorily and safely in an explosive environment. In all the projects this involved either methane, in a class I environment, or petro-chemical vapour, in a class II environment. Below are a couple of pictures of some of the equipment developed.

This project involved developing a large multi-legged walking machine for underground tunneling. It was developed as part of an advanced robotics project funded by the Department of Trade and Industry.

This is part of the radio control system for the above project mounted in a flameproof enclosure. All the outputs were intrinsically safe, hence all the barriers which can be seen on the right, and it allowed the mining machine to be controlled from up to 100m away.
